Creattica.com is a great site where the design community can look forward to submitting great designs as well as view other designs for inspiration.  Over 3,000 designs are featured on the site and you vote on designs if you like them.  Only the best work is featured in their gallery which appears to be monitored by an actual graphic artist(s).  The logos featured are all very creative while keeping the simplicity.  Be sure to check the site out!

Evolution of Tech Logos

While searching for the evolution of logos I found the Evolution of Tech Logos over at Neatorama. Though all of the logos listed here have changed significantly, if not entirely, from the originals, for the most part they’ve been on the same path for decades now. Apple’s first logo was virtually unknown and not even used for a year before they switched over to the rainbow striped apple they used until 1999, when it was replaced with the monochrome apple we all know today.

Be sure to head over to Neatorama to check them all out.

Playstation and Changing Logos

Once a brand has made it’s mark it’s hard to look at any other logo concepts without thinking that they all look inferior to the known design. There may even be a better logo than the one they use in the stack, but the logo the world has already known will always be proffered. Logo Design Love posted about different Sony Playstaion concepts, and though most are not as great as the current logo, there are a couple in the batch with definite potential.

Just to show how important branding is, if Playstation were to change their logo now, I don’t think it would be well received. Not just with Playstation, but any brand in general usually sees a little backlash, just like Pepsi had when they changed their logo a few months back, though it’s evolved, their last re-brand was a little too extreme.

Be sure to check out Logo Design Love’s other posts too, their blog is great.

Logo Design Mistakes

I hate to focus on the negative but Smashing Magazine has an article dedicated to the 10 most common mistakes made by people when choosing a logo, most notably relying on current logo trends and also relying on color for your logo. Everytime I personally design a logo I always work in black and white because, I was taught that if a logo works in black and white, it’ll work in color.

Also many people seem to follow trends such as the current ‘mac’ trend where they want to refelct everything they see, or put a shine on it, but 5 years from now you’ll need a new logo because there are always new trends. You want your business identity to stay with you for a very long time, look at Coca-Cola, they don’t change their brand very much.

Logo Design Books Need Entries

A great way to market yourself as as freelance graphic artist or logo designer is to submit your work to the dozens of contests that are going on any given day, sure you’re not going to enter all contests and some don’t even have monetary compensation but the outcome can be more rewarding. The Logo Designer Blog has a post with three different books that are calling for all logo designers for entries. Two of them have entry fees, though one includes a free book and the last one is fee-free! Be sure to check it out as the deadlines are fast approcaching.
