Dr. Martens Contest

Legendary UK footwear brand is having a contest for designers to create their own Dr. Martens boots. The winners will receive a cash award, as well as their shoe going into production for a whole year. There will be two winners, one determined by the general Dr. Marten voting public, and the other by a panel of judges in the industry. The competition is stiff, but it doesn’t hurt to try. Smithsonian Institution’s Copyright-free Flickr Page

The Smithsonian Institute has started a Flickr page with hundreds of photos that have no copyrights on them. The photos are all high-resolution. Check out the collection here. The above picture is from 1900, a mail carrier being humorous with a baby in his bag.

World’s First Graphic Design Museum

The world’s first graphic design museum has opened in Beyerd Breda, Netherlands. The Museum opened on June 11th and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands was present for the inauguration. The first of it’s kind, the museum is currently hosting four exhibits, including one entitled “100 Years of Dutch Graphic Design.” For more info visit Graphic Design Museum.

MTV and HP Team Up to Produce Graphics Show

MTV is currently seeking digital artists from around the world (animators, web designers, short film makers and sound mixers) for a new show (with HP) that’ll team up the artists and have them compete to win $400,000 (shared equally between four individuals) and various HP products. There is still time to submit an application for a chance to participate in this show. Applicants must be available from July 18th until August 16th which is when the show films in New York City. UrbnFabrik

Taking a little from social networking sites such as Myspace and Facebook, UrbnFabrik is a place for urban artists to network with other artists and companies associated with the urban art scene. The site serves as a stepping stone for artists trying to start a clothing label or other graphic or art venture.

Inmates Get Exhibition

Inmates at the Karachi Central Jail in Pakistan were treated to an exhibition of their artwork this past Sunday. The prisoners (some who are convicted, some awaiting trial) were taught various art techniques for a year and a half by Sikander Ali. In total, ten pieces of art were sold, five to the Consul-General of France.

New Joy Division Zune

On June 17th, Microsoft will release the Joy Division Zune to the public. A limited run of only 500 units will be available, and features the graphic from Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures album by Factory Records graphic artist, Peter Saville. The 80 gig multimedia player will come preloaded with a Joy Division documentary also titled, Unknown Pleasures. For more information check out Zune.
